New project underway

Well I have recently been asked to design a website for the company ALPS who are involved in the production of Access equipment with the engineering profession. The brief was to redesign their current website (http://alps-uk.com) and provide one which they would be able to manage their own content.

The content which they would manage would be images of new equipment and quality photographs of the equipment in use. Obviously there would be a descriptive part required which they would also be able to manage too. There is one part of the brief that I am still trying to place into the build and that is the requirement of PDF files for the target audience to use. As ALPS are wanting to manage this content too, I am trying to find a way this can be done without them having to upload files via an FTP client. I have found WordPress plugins for PDF files but none that can be uploaded directly through WordPress. The only way I can see so far is to upload PDF files through Filezilla into a folder within the root directory of the domain and then use the WordPress plugins.

If any designers out there know of a decent plug in please drop me a line.

Image Manipulation

Recently I was hired to manipulate images that would placed onto Dale Hardware’s website. The job entailed tidying up the images in Photoshop, mainly blurring edges, feathering, and increasing brightness and contrast. You can view the website at http://daledev.commcam.co.uk/dcp/s/homePage.

WordPress

Well, I have finally managed to create a blog for my website http://www.matthewstinson.co.uk.  It hasn’t been without it’s problems though.  This is why I am posting this entry, as it may help any designers who are experiencing similar problems.

My main issue was with the instructions within the WordPress download file.  It just wasn’t clear regarding certain server compatibility.  I use ’1and1′ and the beginner package did not contain the relevant ‘MySQL’ information needed to install WordPress.  After trawling the internet for aid I came across an article on http://antbag.com/how-to-install-wordpress-with-1-and-1-hosting/.  I found this very easy to understand and installed WordPress relatively quickly.

In addition, make sure your ’1and1′ package is the Linux package and it needs to be the ‘home’ package too.  Anything below this wiil not have the ‘MySQL’ option that is needed to run WordPress.
